current drives downstream
webbed feet rapidly pedal
ducklings cross alone
where is their mother?
I scan the river
fluffy tan bodies
bobbing, hurrying along
danger—rocks ahead
heart racing, breath held
will they be carried away?
fifty feet, ten more
feathered friends succeed
direction shift—swim upstream
my rapid pulse calms
ducklings safe near other shore
I sigh with relief
